Allergens

Understanding Allergens
Allergens are substances that cause allergic reactions in individuals that are exposed to them. The list of allergens varies and not everyone is allergic to all allergens. Similarly some individuals may experience allergic reactions to substances that do not typically appear on common lists of allergens.

Types
Among the most common allergens are naturally things such as dust mites, mold spores, pollen and pet dander. For some individuals forms of food may contain allergens. Some insect stings and medicines are also considered to be allergens.

Diagnosis & Tests
It is possible to test an area for allergens. Some common allergens that pose health risks and are known to be found in buildings are tested for regularly, usually using skin tests. If someone is suspected of suffering from an allergy, then testing may be done to confirm the diagnosis.

Prognosis
Individuals who are sensitive to different types of allergens can continue leading healthy and happy lives. They need to change their lives in order to avoid these allergy triggers or talk to their doctor about receiving the appropriate treatment.

Treatment
Oral medications can sometimes be sufficient for the treatment of common allergens, such as ragweed or pollen. If you have a reaction to pet dander but continue to share your home with a pet, you might want to consider regular allergy shots to control the symptoms. Over-the-counter and prescription medications are both available.

Management of Allergies
When allergen reactions are serious, your life could be in jeopardy. To ensure you are promptly and appropriately treated, you need to wear a medical bracelet listing your condition and your known allergies. Don’t make the mistake of not having it when you need it.
