Allergic Rash
Managing an Allergic Rash
An allergic rash is one of the more common problems that individuals experience. It is also one of the most difficult conditions to adequately address.
Symptoms
The allergic rash is typified by a red sensitive area on the skin. In some cases it may be scaly or raised. In general it is small, but it can be medium to large in some cases. In more severe cases there may be fluids that surface in the area. There are other varieties of skin conditions that are similar, but the inclusion of open skin and other details usually signals something more than an allergic rash.
Types
There are two types of allergic rash. The first is atopic dermatitis. This form may be caused by allergens that were ingested. It is important to recognize that atopic dermatitis may not be the result of an allergen either. A number of other conditions can cause this variety of irritated skin. The second form is contact dermatitis. This form of rash is the result of physical contact of the skin with an allergen.
Causes
Rashes that are allergic reactions result from exposure to allergens which could be found in detergents, foods, or medications.
Diagnosis
Visual identification is often sufficient for treatment. To determine the allergen usually requires an allergy test though.
Treatment
A prescription cream is the most common form of treatment. Some are steroid based and some are not. The cream only treats the rash though. It may be effective on rashes caused by other conditions as well.
Misdiagnosis
The rash may be caused by conditions other than an allergy. As a result, it is a good idea to have an allergy test to verify the presence of an allergy. Otherwise, you may miss a cause that could be treated in another, more effective manner.
Allergy Management
Although an allergic rash is usually not cause for alarm, if you have an allergy you might end up in an emergency medical situation down the road. For this reason, carrying a medical card listing your known allergies is important. You can receive the appropriate treatment without having to worry about inadvertent exposure to allergens or delays in treatments for your allergic reactions.
