Antihistamines
Antihistamines & Allergy Reactions
Do you suffer from allergic reactions? If so, you may need to understand more about antihistamines because they are one of the most common treatments for allergies.
Causes
When you come in contact with an allergen, your body releases histamines from your immune system to attack what is seen as an invader in the body. The more histamine is released into your body the worse the symptoms of your allergy are going to be. Antihistamines work by stopping those histamines and reducing their reaction in your body.
Symptoms
Antihistamines can provide relief to allergic reaction symptoms like sneezing, coughing, itching, headaches and nasal congestion. These are the most symptoms associated with allergens. Some prescription antihistamines may be able to help combat other symptoms as well.
Types
Antihistamines can be taken orally in a tablet or capsule form. They can also be found in a topical form which can be applied directly to the skin to treat skin allergies.
Treatment
Using over-the-counter antihistamines can be good for mild symptoms caused by pollen or hay fever. However, you should consult your doctor about the allergy from which you are suffering to ensure that you are getting the proper treatment. Prescription medications can be more effective for some people. In other cases, epinephrine should be made available to prevent severe reactions and possibly anaphylaxis.
Allergy Management
While antihistamines can be an important part of allergy management, you also need to wear a medical ID bracelet so others will be aware of your allergy and the medication you take to control those symptoms.
