Iodine Allergy
Coping with an Iodine Allergy
A number of different drugs that are found in foods and used in medicine can cause allergies in some people. In many cases the symptoms are quite similar. Iodine is one of these drugs. Being aware of your own allergies is an important part of continued good health and can prevent you from ending up in an emergency situation.
Symptoms
In sufficient quantities and with some deliveries, iodine and other drugs can cause irritation and upset stomach even in individuals that do not have an allergy. In individuals who do have an iodine allergy the allergic reaction may be more or less severe depending on their sensitivity, the quantities, and the delivery of the drug. Here is a list of the general symptoms:
• skin irritation,
• itchy eyes,
• swelling eyes
• nasal congestion.
Causes
An iodine allergy is something that individuals may have from birth. Drug allergies may also develop over time. The body’s mechanism releases histamine when it is exposed to iodine and this leads to the symptoms described above.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of an iodine allergy is made by a review of the medical history by a physician or allergy specialist. They may also ask the patient if they have knowledge of any existing iodine allergy. The doctor can examine the condition of the patient if they have already been exposed to iodine as well. In more controlled instances the doctor can conduct a skin test for some drug allergies.
Prognosis & Treatment
With treatment and the removal of iodine sources the patient is likely to improve quickly. Iodine allergy can be problematic though since iodine is common in foods and medical treatments. Typically there is a focus on symptom relief with drug allergies. The patient may also undergo desensitization treatment.
Allergy Management
Because an iodine allergy can be triggered easily due to how common iodine is in food and medications, you need to have a medical wristband at all times. If your allergy is triggered and you can’t speak for yourself, the wrist band will ensure you get the emergency treatment you need.
