Diabetic Diet
Following a Diabetic Diet
Diabetes is a serious disease that can cause devastating health consequences, including blindness, nerve damage, and coma. In addition to monitoring their blood glucose levels, the best way to live a healthy life with this disease is to follow a diabetic diet.
Causes
When you have diabetes, the glucose created in the body for energy purposes from the foods you eat is not properly used by the cells. This is caused by not enough insulin being available in the body. To make sure you don’t have too much glucose left behind in the blood, you need to follow a diabetic diet that prevents you from producing too much glucose.
Treatment
The diabetic diet should include a variety of foods from all of the different food groups. However, the diet should include very limited amounts of foods that are high in fat, high in sodium, or high in processed sugar. Carbohydrates should not be eliminated but need to be eaten in sensible amounts. Smart choices between carbohydrates are need to be made. For example, an apple is a better carbohydrate choice than part of a candy bar.
Prognosis
When a diabetic diet is followed carefully and combined with exercise, the prognosis for diabetes is good. As long as you keep your blood sugar levels under control, you can prevent the serious consequences that can result from the disease.
Diabetes Management
Because drops and spikes in glucose levels in the blood can occur even when you do follow a good diabetic diet, you need to wear a medical bracelet at all times so you can receive immediate, life-saving treatment.
