Endometriosis

Introduction/Overview
What is endometriosis? Endometriosis is a condition where the endometrium, or layer which lines the uterus, grows in other places. Sometimes it grows on the ovaries, fallopian tubes or in the lining of the pelvis. The endometrium is what causes you to bleed during your menstrual period every month. That means that this tissue will become thick each month, then break apart and bleed. Because there may not be an opening where the blood can escape, it can pool inside the abdomen and cause all types of problems. It can also cause infertility.

Symptoms  & Diagnosis
The symptoms of endometriosis can range from mild to severe. Some people may even have no symptoms at all. Others may have horrible pain before and during their periods and even have abdominal pain at other times of the month. Endometriosis symptoms can also include heavy bleeding during your periods and even between them. If you have severe pain and/or heavy bleeding, it’s time to see a doctor. Tests to diagnose endometriosis can include a pelvic exam, vaginal ultrasound, or a laparoscopy, where the doctor will insert a scope through the navel to view the reproductive organs.

Known Causes
No one knows what causes endometriosis. It could be an immune system malfunction, a genetic cause, endometrial cells which flow back through the fallopian tubes and grow, or it can be caused by cells which somehow get carried through the bloodstream.

Treatments/Procedures
Endometriosis treatment can involve medications and surgery. You may need pain killers for severe abdominal pain. Sometimes hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, the vaginal ring, and patches are used to give relief. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists and antagonists can lower estrogen levels and stop endometriosis. Other drugs which prevent menstruation are also used. Sometimes endometriosis surgery is performed to remove the growths or adhesions while other times the last resort is a complete hysterectomy.

Prevention / Vaccination

Because the causes of endometriosis are not known, there is no way to prevent the condition.

Prognosis / Management
Management of endometriosis usually comes down to pain management and ways to feel more comfortable. You might try a heating pad or a warm bath for cramps. Over-the-counter pain relievers should work well but if you have excessive pain, you may need to get a prescription pain reliever. If you are diagnosed with endometriosis, it is very important to wear a medic alert bracelet identifying your disease, meds, and who to call in case of emergency.

Alternative Treatments & Products
Plant chemicals, or flavones, are said to be good for endometriosis. Some vegetables have these, especially kale, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, and other varieties in this family. Omega-3 fatty acids are recommended as are flaxseeds. These can reduce swelling and pain. Many women try acupuncture for pain relief.  Some have success and some do not.
